Ming Chung Restaurant

My wife has craving for Xing Hua Bee Hoon today and I decided to bring her to Ming Chung Restaurant that serves Xing Hua Delicacy located at Maude Road. You can find many awards by the various variety shows at the restaurant. Here's what we ordered:

- Xing Hua Bee Hoon

The bee hoon is tasty and fragrant especially with the fried spring onions that was added into the bee hoon. You can find ingredients like prawns, sotong, vegetables, sliced lor bak and bean sprouts. I think that the bee hoon will taste even better if they have added clams and dried shrimps. This will add more flavour to the dish.

- Deep Fried Batang Fish

The fish is tasty and wholesome. I find that if the thickness of the fish is a little too thick, If the fish is being sliced thinner, it will be even more crispy.

Overall, I find that the dishes are pretty good but can be better.

Soon Lee Cooked Food/Fried Cockles Kway Teow

I was at Toa Payoh Lorong 5 Food Centre today for dinner. There are 2 Fried Kway Teow stalls that are next to each other, They are namely Soon Lee Cooked Food and Fried Cockles Kway Teow. I have always wanted to compare the 2 Fried Kway Teow to see which is better. Therefore I ordered one plate of Fried Kway Teow for S$3.00 from each of the stalls. Here's the review for the 2 stalls:

- Soon Lee Cooked Food

The Fried Kway Teow was very fragrant and the sweet sauce that was added into the kway teow was just nice and it is not too sweet. I find that the doneness of the kway teow is not too moist or too dry. You can find ingredients like fish cake, chinese sausages, bean sprouts, cockles and eggs.

- Fried Cockles Kway Teow

Its Fried Kway Teow tastes a little sweet due to the sweet sauce but it was acceptable for me. Although they have added some lard in the kway teow, it wasn't as fragrant as expected. The doneness of the kway teow is moist and has a wet texture. You can also find ingredients like fish cake, chinese sausages, bean sprouts, cockles and eggs.

Overall, I personally prefer Soon Lee Cooked Food as its Kway Teow taste slightly better than Fried Cockles Kway Teow due to the amount of the sweet sauce that was added. The former's doneness of the kway teow is just nice for me, not too moist nor dry. However, if you are the kind that prefer your fried kway teow to be sweeter or more moist, you may want to try Fried Cockles Kway Teow instead.

Penang Seafood Restaurant

A friend strongly recommended me to check out this Penang Seafood Restaurant at Geylang. When I was there, I noticed many people waiting for a table. The whole place was very crowded. I also noticed that the stall has won some awards by the various food variety channels including Makansutra. Here's what I ordered:

-
Penang Fried Kway Teow

The Penang Fried Kway Teow was tasty and it tastes very similar to the one in Penang. It consists of ingredients like prawns, bits of lard, bean sprouts, chinese sausages, cockles and eggs. The bits of lard that was added in the Fried Kway Teow kind of exploded in my mouth when I chewed it.

- Small Prawn Bee Hoon

The Small Prawn Bee Hoon is tasty and the soup has a rich prawny taste that goes well with the bee hoon. I'm not a prawn lover but these small prawns was crunchy and the texture is wholesome. It's like eating dried shrimps. You can also find ingredients like kang kong, bean sprouts, hard boiled egg, sliced pork and prawns. This Small Prawn Bee Hoon is one of the better ones I have tasted.

- Assam Laksa

The Assam Laksa is absolutely awesome. The gravy is thick and richly filled with the goodness from the kampong fish that was used. This dish is an appetiser booster, the Assam Laksa has ingredients like onions, pineapples cubes, cucumber strips and not forgetting the chunks of fish meat. You can actually taste the fish meat unlike other Assam Laksa that I have tasted. This Assam Laksa is comparable to the one in Penang and it is highly recommended. This is one dish you cannot miss if you visit this restaurant.

- Crispy Tofu

The Crispy Tofu is pretty all right, it is crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The tofu is mixed with fish meat and the combination is good. Take note that this dish is enough for about 3 to 4 person.

-
Baby Spinach Soup

The Baby Spinach Soup was delicious and the soup base was very thick, There are also eggs, salted eggs, century eggs, wolfberries and small bits of minced meat in the dish. On top of these, they added some crispy Ikan bilis on top making the texture even better when you chew it.

-
Shrimp Paste Chicken

The Shrimp Paste Chicken was tasty and very crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Overall, I find that the food is good and definitely one of the better Penang Food around. You must try it if you are around the area.

Boat Quay Wanton Mee (秀口基面食)

I was at Amoy Street Food Centre for breakfast today. While I was walking around thinking of what to eat, I  remembered that there is a stall that sells nice Chicken Curry Mee. I decided to order a bowl of Chicken Curry Mee and I'm glad that it was still as delicious. The chicken and potatoes are cooked till it's nice and soft. The curry is thick and goes very well with the noodles. The taste reminds me of the curry my grandma used to cook. This is one Chicken Curry Mee not to be missed. Yummy!!

Tiong Bahru Lor Mee

I was at Tiong Bahru Market and Food Centre for lunch. I decided to check out the Tiong Bahru Lor Mee again after so many years since they moved back to the renovated Market and Food Centre. There was a queue at the stall and I joined in the queue to order a large bowl of Lor Mee for S$3.00. The Lor Mee is tasty and the texture of the gravy is sticky and gluey but I find the gravy a little bit salty. The Lor Mee consists of ingredients like fried wantan, fried fish fillet, sliced stewed pork, fishcake and beansprouts. The fried fish is fresh but I find it a little salty. Frankly speaking, I find the Lor Mee very tasty at first but somehow the goodness does not last and there's nothing very unique about it. It's still worth a try if you happen to be around the area.

Shashlik Restaurant

Whenever I have a craving for steak, the first place that I'll always think of is always Shaslik Restaurant. This is one of the oldest and few restaurants that serves Russian Cuisine. They have won numerous awards for fine culinery. When we were there, the restaurant was packed with lots of people but luckily there was a table for 2 and so we don't have to wait long before we could have our dinner. We  ordered the Borshch Soup, Shashlik of Beef Fillet and Shashlik of Chicken. The Borshch Soup is delicious and one of the best I have ever tasted. The vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes and the chunks of beef are cooked till it's nice and soft. The sour cream that was added into the soup makes it even more appetising. Yummy!! Of course you have the option not to add the sour cream if you do not like it. Next is my favourite dish the Shashlik of Beef Fillet, I requested for my doneness to be medium. The beef fillet is well marinated with garlic and other spicies. The beef fillet was grilled to perfection and it was tender and juicy. The side dish that came along consist of papaya, a quarter of a hard-boiled egg, celery stick, tomatoes, cucumber, potato salad, pickles and coleslaw. I find that the pototo salad and coleslaw is pretty good. Lastly, the Shashlik of Chicken was very tender but I felt that it could be even better in terms of taste. In conclusion, the Borshch Soup and Shashlik of Beef Fillet are fantastic, these 2 dishes are their signature and not to be missed. You must give this a try if you are a steak fan.

Fried Oyster Omelette

I had craving for Fried Oyster Omelette today and I decided to head down to this Nam Heng Restaurant Coffeeshop located at Upper Serangoon Road to satisfy my craving. When I was there, I noticed that there were already people waiting at their table for their Oyster Omelette to be served. I ordered a small plate of Oyster Omelette or S$4.00. The Fried Oyster Omelette is delicious, it is thin and crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. You will find that the oysters are fresh and taste wholesome. Overall, I find that this is one of the better Fried Oyster Omelette around if you do not mind it being a little oily. You can check it out if you are around the area.

Spring Court Restaurant Pte Ltd (詠春园)

I brought my family to Spring Court Restaurant today for Fathers' Day celebration. This restaurant has been around since 1929, they are one of the oldest family operated restaurants. There was even a movie produced by Raintree Pictures in 2011 to capture Spring Court's memorable years in Great World. We ordered 2 rolls of Popiah, Roasted Chicken, Steamed Soon Hock, Braised Dried Oysters and Assorted Vegetables with Black Moss, Tofu with Minced Meat and Spinach and last but not least, Braised Noodles with Shredded Meat. For the Popiah, it is very tasty and filled with alot of ingredients like bean sprouts, fried bean curd, carrots, strips of turnip, minced hard boiled eggs and minced meat. For the Roast Chicken, the skin is nice and crispy on the outside and the meat taste fragrant but it is a little salty due to the salt that was sprinkled on the chicken. The Steamed Soon Hock is delicious and fresh, the fish was cooked with light soya sauce and other spicies and it tastes very good. The Braised Dried Oysters ans Assorted Vegetables with Black Moss is tasty, the oyster sauce was poured over the dish hence adding more flavour to the vegetables and mushrooms making it nice and smooth. The Tofu was nice and soft and they sit on a layer of spinach. A generous serving of minced meat in thick sauce was poured over the tofu, making the entire dish very delicious. As for the Braised Noodles with Shredded Meat, I find that it's not too dry and the gravy is not oily especially when your stomach is almost full. Overall I find that the food is pretty good and definitely one of the better ones that I have tasted.

Mitzi Cantonese Restaurant (美食之家)

I was at Mitzi Cantonese Restaurant for dinner today with my wife to celebrate Fathers' Day with my Father-In-Law. One of the specialty of this restaurant is the Suckling Pig and Shark Fins Soup as well as Fish Maw Soup with Crabmeat. We ordered a Cold Dish, Crab Meat and Fish Maw Soup, Roasted Chicken Skin with Sotong Prawn Paste, Prawn Roll and Stir Fry Kailan. The first dish to be served is theCold Dish which consists of Mayonnaise Prawn Salad, Fried Eggs with Shark Fins, Fried Sesame Chicken, Jellyfish and Pork Ribs. I find that the Cold Dish is pretty normal but I must comment that the Fried Eggs with Shark Fins is very fragrant and tasty and the Fried Sesame Chicken is crispy and very fragrant with lots of sesame. It is also very thinly sliced, making it like Sesame Chicken Pancake. The Crab and Fish Maw Soup has lots of eggs and has a thick texture, it is filled with the goodness of the crabmeat and eggs making it absolutely delicious. The Roast Chicken Skin with Sotong Prawn Paste is very tasty, the chicken skin is crispy and the sotong prawn paste has a thin texture. For the Prawn Roll, I find that it has a fishy taste today and not as nice as the last time that I tasted it. Lastly for the Kailan, it was fresh and very crunchy. Overall, I find that all the dishes were pretty good except for the Prawn Roll which I think could be better. The total bill was $210 and that works out to be about $30 per pax. I will recommend this place for family gathering and celebrations but do remember to place your order in advance if you want to try their Suckling Pig and Peking Duck.

Kko Kko Nara Chicken & Food (꼬꼬나라)

I was at this Korean Restautant for dinner today with my colleagues. This Korean restaurant is opened by a Korean that serves authentic Korean Food. The restaurant is kindof small but it's nice and cozy for couples or a group of 4.  To avoid any disappointment, it's better to make a reservation especially if you are going there for dinner.

Here's what we ordered:

-
Special Garlic Soy Sauced Chicken (MaNeul Gan Jang Chicken), Sweet and Spicy Chicken (Yang Nyum Chicken)

The Special Garlic Soy Sauced Chicken is very crispy on the outside even when it's coated with the Special Garlic Soy Sauce. Likewise, for the Sweet and Spicy Chicken, it's crispy on the outside but the sauce is kindof sweet with a tinge of spiciness.

-
Spicy Rice Cake with Noodles and Vegetables (DDuk Bok Gi)

The Spicy Rice Cake with Noodles and Vegetables was cooked in a small pan and heated using a small stove. The rice  tastes rice cake taste nice and chewy even after the gravy was refilled and boiled over a few hours. The gravy tastes sweet and spicy and it becomes thicker the longer you boil it. You can find lots of ingredients like vegetables, mushrooms, carrots, hard boilled egg, noodles and even glass noodle.

- Steamed Pork (Bo Ssam)

The Steam Pork is well marinated therefore very tasty. The texture is soft and the meat melts in your mouth.
Yummy!

- Kimchi Steamboat (Kimchi Jungol)

LIke the Spicy Rice Cake, the Kimchi Steamboat is also aerved on a small pan over a mini stove. It has a sourish taste. It is very appetising but it might be too spicy for those of you who cannot take spicy food. You can find ingredients like tofu, vegetables, sliced pork belly and mushrooms. This dish is very suitable for a rainy day to warm your stomach.

Overall, I find that the food is good and definitely one of the better authentic Korean food around.
